About fivemoons

Hi! I’m Sharon, the dyer behind fivemoons.

I produce unique one-of-a-kind (ooak) vibrant multi-coloured yarns in small lots, and ‘solid’, subtly varied colours in repeatable lots, aiming for a versatile collection overall with colours that harmonise, blend, and can easily be used together.

fivemoons started out based in my kitchen at home, rising from my personal frustration as a hand knitter who found it very difficult to source luxury hand-dyed yarns in the mid 2000s. Using experience gained as a child from helping my mother, who started hand spinning and dyeing with both plant-based and acid dyes back in the 1970s, I experimented and developed my own style using acid dyes. Friends, and then my Local Yarn Shop became interested, and my business was born.

In 2009 fivemoons moved to a dedicated workshop in a converted building next to the ex-WW2 airfield at Dunkeswell, high in the Blackdown Hills in East Devon, where it is surprisingly quiet and peacefully rural. There are gentle views of pasture and cows on one side, with the ever-changing colour display of the beech trees and hedges commonly found bordering farmland in the Blackdowns stretching into the distance. For contrast, looking up often reveals clashingly bright multicoloured displays of open parachute canopies against a big sky.

I look forward to sharing the creative life and inspiration behind fivemoons with you over in my blog, I hope to see you there!
